Huddersfield Chess Club 2017/18 Season Half Term Report
Just a quick note to members explaining where we are and what is happening in some of the teams.
The Club is in good health, having secured location in the redesigned (and very nice) Lindley Liberal Club President’s room. We have welcomed in 3 new players in Nicky Thompson, Nick Sykes and Andrew Dearnley. The archiving is now sorted and Greg is bringing the office of treasurer into the 21st century.
Again it is getting interesting, with Huddersfield A still on for the title. Should we win our rescheduled game against Belgrave, we will be a point behind the leaders. All the top teams have beaten each other.
Some shout outs:
Steve, Dave K and Greg are all in the top 10 players for the Calderdale League. Dave K has won all his games in the league and Steve is unbeaten in all leagues.
Huddersfield B are overpowering all opponents in Division 2 and are the hot favourites to be promoted. Almost the entire squad is in the top 10, with Granville leading at 1.
It is very tight with Huddersfield joint top with Wakefield. Defeat to David Browns earlier in the season put us on trouble as the return of high rated players suddenly made the league more competitive. The Bishops are playing well under Rob, with some fantastic results and games coming from the top boards.
Craig is captaining the Rook like a maestro with good competitive games occurring amidst the wizardry of grading handicap.
Finally, I hope you are enjoying play this season. Please support your team members and captains in bringing back the silverware this year (reminder – we need it polishing…). Competitions are ongoing in the Club Championship and we still have a beer and chess event to organise. There is of course the Congress, the County Season and numerous kids events coming up with Yorkshire.
Happy Christmas and a (winning!) New Year.
Round 4 of the Club Championship has been drawn. The official date for your games to be played remains the 7th. However can I urge you to agree with your opponent to play tomorrow if possible. We don't have the club room on the 14th and if players want to agree then the 28th is the latest they can be played

Huddersfields first match of the season ended in defeat away to Rose Foregrove 3-5. Richard Boylan (captain), and Gary Hinchcliffe both won with draws from David Firth & Dave Keddie.
Victories against Brighouse, Halifax B, Hebden Bridge (an outstanding 1-4 away win) and Halifax A (0-5 away win). Losses to Todmorden and various cancelled matches due to illness and snow. Write ups in the Calderdale League sections.
The Knights are close to winning the league and require a win in the remaining 2 games. The Bishops are 2nd place, with the tension rising...
